Monday's start

Another Monday, another start of a new "work" week.  Twenty-one days until the town election.  Spring appears to have sprung, at least for this week.   So what is going on this week besides the weather?

Important:  If you have not registered to vote, tomorrow March 13, 2012 is the last day to do so and be eligible to vote in the town election on April 2, 2012.  Make sure you are registered!!!!!  The Town Clerk's Office will be open until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday for voter registration.  Better yet, don't wait until Tuesday.  Get down there today (I believe closing time is 4:30 p.m. on Monday).

The other important date is Wednesday, March 14, 2012.  Candidates' Night at the Senor Center. Starts 6:30 P.M.

This one should be the tone setter for the rest of the campaign season.  Having heard the candidates for selectman last Thursday, it will be intriguing to see how each in action a second time.  This is not to down play the other elections.  School Committee and Board of Health races do have significant ramifications to them (not slighting any of the other contested races.  However, those three mentioned races involve the three different boards/committee in forefront of the recent on topic issues in town).

Every race is important.  Let none of us forget that.

Just what does it mean that there are so many contested races in town?  For one thing, it means a very interesting election.  I am just waiting for it to get very interesting though.  It has in many ways been extremely quiet for an election with so many candidates.

I suppose it is something to be thankful for that the 24/7 coverage on the national scene hasn't and isn't every likely to trickle down on the local level.  Demographics just do not warrant it.

On a wider spectrum, the importance includes the fact that there are going to be new people on the Boards of Health and Selectmen and School Committee.  We could see similar results in 4 other races. Whether it happens on such a wide scale obviously depends on the candidates and most importantly the voters.

I have touched upon this fact before.  It is worth mentioning again though.  Hard to predict what to expect from the newly elected officials, especially since it is hard to predict who those officials will be.  But we can expect a certain need to adjust to reality of office, and they can expect that no matter what they think they are in for, it will be so much more.

I still see no indication to revise my initial 25% to 30% turnout at the polls.  There are a couple of key indicators I will be looking at in the next few weeks.  Honestly, I hope I end up being completely wrong on this. It would be an extremely good thing to have a much stronger turnout than what I am predicting.

The S-T article on Fairhaven yesterday seems to have given this blog a slight boost for the day.

Want to also really thank them for important mention and the p.r. about the charter commission petition.  Hopefully the mention will get a wider audience thinking about the charter commission concept.  People thinking.  Never a bad thing.

  1. John, I know this isn't a politics question but I have been wondering about something. You have mentioned several times in your blog about the impending budget problems, deficits, cuts, etc.

Given the fact that our winter was so much warmer this year, would there not be money in reserve from the original budgeted amounts? I know from analyzing my own fuel bills and the fact that DEC, JAN, and FEB were 5-6 degrees above normal, we saved quite a bit yet I don't hear anyone talking about this point.

Wouldn't this odd, winter reprieve from sand, salt, plowing, possible overtime, and especially fuel costs in the schools and all town buildings add up to quite a savings? Or does all of that money get spent 'in other ways' this year?

I know we can't ever anticipate such a warm winter but it seems like this year, these savings would be able to transfer over to at least help somewhat for 2012-2013. Maybe it doesn't work that way. Just a thought.

    Any info is appreciated.
