Friday's bit.

It has been a few days since I have taken a look at who has taken out papers to run in the April election.  I previously noted the selectmen's race which is shaping up (Incumbent Selectman Murphy being challenged by BPW Commissioner Riley).  The other race which could be contested is the BOH with the incumbent Jeannine Lopes and challenger Louise Barteau having both taken out nomination papers.

I believe the deadline to pull papers is February 13, 2014.  If you are interested in running or just interested, a good place to start is this link posted by the Town Clerk regarding the deadlines for the election.

Could be just the weather, but the excitement level right now could be described in the "cold as ice" category. Most of the chatter around town seems to be teeth chattering as a result of the temperature rather than any great interest.

Still early in the sense that the bulk of the action really doesn't start until after the February holiday.

It will be what it will be, right?

With the governor's budget, numbers for the next fiscal year can start to be firmed up a bit.  It would be extremely beneficial to the town, in fact every city and town, if the house and senate could in fact get together sometime by the end of March to pass a joint resolution on the local aid (i.e. a procedure whereby they vote to set at least that amount of the state budget).

As a practical matter whatever extra falls from the tree after those bodies shake it isn't going to amount to any real windfall.  Quite frankly, in the "it is what it is" view we will most likely just proceed with the governor's numbers and look to apply any "extra" into capital needs.

Just a rambling thought.

Deadline for articles for the annual town meeting was yesterday. It is either going to be a short annual, funding article wise, or a ton of late add-ons, or a whopping special, or simply a nice change of pace.

All I have seen is the list at this point.  Details to be forth coming.  Seems like three proposed articles from the town government study committee.  I really need to do some catch up there.  Preliminary titles for the articles: Establishing Town Administrator; Restructuring BPW, Implementation of IT Strategy.  Will be awaiting details.

Okay, unfortunately I am out of time for today.  Not much of a blog today, I know, but the best I can do for the moment to try and keep the New Year's resolution.

Stay warm and Be Safe!

  1. Just a rambling thought is spot on when we think about how articles should be done ,but in reality are not done in the correct manner.Hopefully the department budgets can be submitted correctly with the 3 scenarios that were attached.Hopefully a lot of trees wont be cut to generate this data. One budget with with -2,0,+1,+2 subtracted from the bottom line would be sufficient until FINCOM makes there adjustments.
