Some odds and ends

A good job by the police department with the handling of traffic at the Rt. 6 and Main Street intersection for the parade.  From what I could see, things flowed pretty well.

Water, we need some in the form of rain.  We are about a foot below normal for this year.  Unless things change soon, a water ban is probably inevitable.

Family Fun Day is this Saturday, July 14th.  It is a part of the Bi-Centennial Celebration in town.  Sounds like a good time.

In case you are wondering, Selectmen's next scheduled meeting is July 16th.  Was nice to see them all marching in the parade heading in the same direction for once.

The Farmer's Market.  Every Sunday in season.  Saw some great looking stuff there.  Brought home some fresh beets and local honey from the parade.  Would have gotten more but ... I was saving my money for a Sponge Bob balloon from the parade, which I didn't get because I spent it on Kettle Popcorn.  I am guessing the popcorn lasted longer than the balloon would have so ...

Presently existing pet peeve #1 -  the people who zoom down the empty lane that has to merge because it is closed off and then get ticked off because they have to actually wait for someone in the traffic lane who managed to see all the merge signs and arrows to let them in the traffic lane.

Pet peeve #2 -  the same person with a cell phone stuck to their ear.

Pet peeve #3 -  the very same person who has just driven like a maniac to get to the front of the traffic, for the sole purpose of stopping it to be the first to make a left hand turn.

The Bridge.  I am assuming that I will see the work completed at some point during the remainder of my life.  Probably be done just in time for the next round of repairs.

Still waiting with bated breathed for the Alden Road/Bridge Street intersection to finish up.  Well past the time for it, hopefully will be effective.  Soon, oh so temptingly soon.

Yesterday, the shovel ceremony was held for the new Wood Elementary School.  Born in controversy, the new school is nonetheless destined to happen.

Ran across a worthy fundraiser on The Ice Chest Bar and Grille. As posted on its events calendar, Matty Memorial Fundraiser with Guest Bartenders 4-8 pm.  If you are reading this you may know one of the guest.  Maybe we will see you there, hope so.

As to the event, well most parents with school age children should be aware of the charity.  A positive organization doing good things for the kids, in memory of a child taken too soon from this world.

It is official, the whole country is nuts.  One month of fund raising (June) for the presidential candidates has Obama raising $71 million in June with Romney raising $106 million.  In one month roughly $0.56 for every person in this country.

On a more local level of crazy, and more like insanity, a July 10, 2012 article in the globe had Elizabeth Warren with $13.2 million in the bank after the third quarter with Scott Brown having $12.9 million at the end of April.

All that money to going to elect someone to represent you in the U.S. Senate.  Roughly $3.95 per person in Massachusetts to date, with four months to go.

I am figuring someone must have pretty much doubled up, because I know the only thing I plan to contribute to either campaign is my two cents worth.

  1. Was it a redhead in a gray Mazda with lot's of bumper stickers? If so, GUILTY as charged. I'm glad you've brought up the Rte. 6 lane merge when heading west toward the bridge to NB, because my take on it is different than yours. I think it's valid to approach the merge in both the right and left lanes. I'm sure there would equal numbers seeing it either way so I think some better signage is required to clear up the confusion.
When I see the merge sign AFTER the light at Middle St. with no 'merge in 50 ft' sign (or however many feet) as I approach the Main St. crossing, that tells me that the 2 lanes should be open to autos up until the point after the light, then the drivers should alternate entering the one lane to proceed over the bridge.
Many times during the school year as I was trying to go over the bridge to work as the FHS staff and students were arriving, the cars in the right lane would be backed up nearly to Green St. while the left lane would have only a 1/2 dozen cars in it. I believe that the Main and Middle intersections do not have signs that state 'left lane for left turn only' in order to avoid that type of daily back up.
I'll have to quadruple check the intersections in question when I approach them again later today b/c the signage might be getting changed as needed while the whole debacle continues on and on and on.
That being said, I hate it when a speeding driver who is also yakking or texting approaches a well marked gradual merge from out of no where and expects everyone to just make way for him/her.

  2. Oh, one more thought...regarding the Matty O. Fund: There is not a single child in this town who's life Matty has not touched. ANYONE under the age of 18 who has participated in ANY sporting activity in this town whether through school, the rec center, Little League, Livesy Club, St Joe's, and/or had gym classes on the playing fields at HMS or nearly anything else good for the kids in this town, has been the recipient of the gifts provided by the dollars and goodwill, raised with the strength and love of all those who knew and loved Matty. The least any of us could do is drop by The Chest, buy a drink and tip the guest bartender generously.
