I have spent some time this morning reading The Fairhaven Neighborhood News, reading again the articles in The Standard Times, reviewing past issues of both, and numerous posts and comments across the great wide web on sites and pages from which I have not yet been banned.
As to the last viewed references, not so sure I would be distressed at all if I were banned in a few more places.
I suppose from a very selfish perspective I am a bit peeved in that I have had to rip up the outlines for my planned blogs for the next several days. Granted that in my mind the same are relevant and timely, but I don't intend to join in a game of buck buck after it has been won.
Put another way, there is a big difference between taking a victory lap and re-running the race.
My intended writings would just seem too much like excess at this point.
I think it is also time to add to the previous list of a day or to ago. Rule No.6, put in very local terms, never forget what suit is trump in a game of pitch. Rule No. 7, again put in very local terms, never play a trump card in a game of pitch too early.
Many things get stated which are in and of themselves legitimate issues. The problem is many legitimate issues are raised which are not relevant to the time or discussion at hand. I am sure some will disagree with the "relevant" factor. what's one more disagreement at this point.
Quite frankly I find it extremely hard to distinguish between tactics put in play and tactics complained of. But what do I know. It just seems that the more things change, the more they stay the same. The bus still runs, the route gets changed periodically.
The goose and gander concept folks. No matter the issue, once you buy into it, all tend to go on a feeding frenzy.
If you don't have a clue as to what any of this is about, I say good for you. I would advise you to do yourself a favor and not go out of your way to find out.
Anyway, enough. More than enough.
Be safe.
If we can draw a topic from anything in the papers you mentioned, I think the Rogers/Oxford committee is worth a discussion.
ReplyDeleteIt appeared from listening to the representatives at the Selectmen's meeting on Monday, they appear to have lost sight of their purpose. Or maybe I don't have it right.
I thought the purpose of the committee was to explore possible uses for the buildings and to make those known to the Selectmen. I didn't think it was to 'find' a user. But just make a number of recommendations based on the type and condition of the buildings. I thought money was approved to pay an (engineer?) to evaluate the condition of Rogers so the committee would know 'what' they are dealing with as far as coming up with ideas.
It's obvious the school dept. didn't put money into buildings that were not going to be used beyond their needs. I thought the school department HAD said they ARE going to turn the buildings over to the town as soon as they don't need them.
As far as Rogers being unlit and kids going on the roof- that does seem like a police issue.
We are soon going to have two buildings that will take God-knows-what to be turned into anything.
Here we are almost at the time when the school dept. may turn them over. They need winterizing, security, and such, and the committee doesn't have a single suggestion to make concerning them? The town either has to use them, or sell them ASAP. Can the town budget support two white elephants? And for how long?
Add it to the list Union Wharf,Oxford,Rogers,C.D.building,Hoppys Landing,Bridge street rental, there could be more we are not aware of.They are not used,or rented,Union Wharf is a money vacuum with no end in sight. They all have potential ,but alas ,no potential buyers or developers in sight..
ReplyDeleteIn today's S-T, the adult bike escorts that will bring the children up the bike path from Rogers to the Wood School, are they going to be CORIed? Are they volunteering on behalf of the school department, or if my child rides with them, is it the same as if I asked my neighbor to drop my child to school? Is the liability going to be spelled out before the program starts? Parents ought to know who's responsible if a child got hurt or lost.
ReplyDeleteLets get real here folks,in my day we hopped on our bike went and went to school. Now we our trying to revive an old tradition for some ,and the first thing that is said who is liable.Maybe we should have lawyers as escorts an this could solve one problem.A school nurse to treat any injuries, and of course a policeman to direct traffic. Maybe just common sense will work, you be the judge....
ReplyDeleteLife's full of litigation due to what years ago would have seemed unimaginable reasons. All I'm saying as a parent, are the people who escort my child on the bike path doing so in association with the school department or are they completely independent of the school department.
ReplyDeleteWhen my child rides to school with a neighbor, I know exactly our arrangement. I KNOW she is going to watch my child until they are in the care of a teacher. She is not just bringing my child to the parking lot.
Watching another's child, is a big responsibility. That needs to be realized.
Hi all, perhaps a bit late to reply on this one, but I'll give it a go.
ReplyDeleteAs described in the article, the Bike Bus is being implemented by the Fairhaven Bikeway Committee as a part of Mass DOT's Safe Routes to School program. So we have a nice organized foundation from which to build this initiative. The Bike Bus, and the entire SRTS program is heartily supported by Dr. Baldwin, Amy Hartley-Matteson and Nurse Denise Valois at Wood School. Some one or more of them will be a part of our kickoff ride October 4th.
We'll be sending out flyers, I believe this week, with a little more description of the program, but the main intent is to get interested parents to contact us, me specifically, for the full rundown of schedule, requirements, volunteer opportunities, etc., and to sign your kids up.
In answer to a couple of your concerns:
- yes, the volunteers will be CORIed.
- We have rules as to the number of kids allowed per adult.
- We are arranging, with the principal, how to deliver and pick up the kids. It will be similar to the way walkers are managed now, except we will have an attendance list to hand off to the school.
- Even better than all that, volunteer, or just ride along with us. It's an almost flat, 1.2 mile ride. 15+ minutes at a 3rd grader's pace, much faster back to your car or home.
I'm fairly certain we will have no shortage of parents riding with their own kid.
When you get your flier, please get in touch. I look forward to talking with you, riding with you, and learning your names.
So when the students ride, they are the under the responsibility of the bikeway committee and not the FPS? Or is it a partnership?
ReplyDeleteThis should be made clear beforehand for the benefit of the parents, the bikeway committee and the FPS. I look forward to seeing it in the flyer.
IMPORTANT NOTE
ReplyDeleteThe concerns and issues raised here should be directed to the bikeway committee and school committee. People should not be utilizing this blog in the hopes of obtaining answers to some very pertinent questions.
Any parent with any questions should seek the answers from the appropriate parties.
