According to the latest state statistics, assuming I can manage an average remaining life, I have 10,110.50 days left to live. That gives me 242,652 hours, or 14,559,120 minutes, or 873,547,200 seconds. I like the count in seconds. Probably the only count in mega millions jackpot type numbers I got a chance at.
A few pieces ago I ran a column under the title "Dumber than Dumb". I think I am going to make that a periodic "observation" for the blog. If you happen to run across something you think fits into that category, let me know. Let me know if it is okay to credit you for the info if I do a "story" on it.
Our selectmen get back on track tomorrow. As someone noted in a comment to yesterday's piece, the tourism office move is up for discussion at 6:45 P.M.
This issue has been beaten so often you would think there is nothing left to take a whack at. But just like that annoying mole game at the arcade, right after you think you have smacked that critter hard enough to send it through the other side of the world, the darn thing pops up through another hole.
While whack-a-mole might be an apt analogy, it might be more appropriate to compare this to trying to keep a house of cards standing during an earthquake. So far every argument against moving tourism into the Academy Building just comes tumbling down with a little tremor.
While I understand the "location" argument, I don't agree with it. I have been to too many tourist destinations where the tourism office is located at various locations, other than smack dab in the middle of town.
It would be nice to have an office in the Center. Just as it would be nice to have one at the end of Route 240 and at the Academy building and in North Fairhaven just over the "little" bridge. You know right around the areas in town people who are tourist have to travel by to get into town. Tourism isn't just about the Center.
Quite frankly so many holes have been blown through the location argument that at this point one is only shooting at air.
The heat factor. We will have to heat it in the winter and it will be too hot in the summer. Seriously? We heat it now, along with the office he is in. If you are afraid the thermostat will be set two high there is a twenty dollar solution to that problem. In the summer, well sorry, a room A.C. isn't going to make the world end. You don't have to do the whole building.
I for the life of me cannot fathom how this would even be an issue if the private entity occupying the building wasn't there. since that private entity isn't paying for space, utilities or upkeep, operates a "museum" 3 or 4 hours a week seasonally, I fail to see why the town should in any way shape or form be impeded from utilizing that building.
Folks, it may be I may have developed a "trench warfare" mentality on this one, but I can tell you that this is not going to end, no matter what happens with tourism. The days of giving away town services and assets for the convenience of private groups has to end, be it a slow painful process or a quick painful process.
You aren't suppose to do it for any group. It isn't fair to the groups you do make pay. It isn't fair to the taxpayer. It isn't legal. Because you like the cause, the group, the people or they supported you, doesn't change any of that.
