Thursday's Odds and Ends

Too early to get an inkling of just how Tuesday's debate has affected the polls.  By mid-morning updated figures will be released and there should be some glimpse from at least the Rasmussen 3 day and Gallup 7 day trackers.  Anything that came out yesterday doesn't include post debate opinion.

Polls are interesting.  A poll provides insight. It can be a good toll for predicting.  But any poll, and many polls have been wrong before.  Every election the "formula" is tweaked to adjust for "errors" the last time around.

The important thing about a poll is the questions within it and the break down of the affiliations and demographics of the people interviewed.  Remember that.

The other thing to remember is that in this presidential election, there are only 8 to 11 battleground states (depending on the poll you follow).  Absent a huge shift in opinion pretty much everywhere else it is assumed the remaining states have are considered solid bets for one of the candidates.

Because it seems we are down to the point were battleground states are the only ones that matter, it also seems that despite any shift in the overall popular vote, absent some significant changes in those states, if the election were held tomorrow, Obama wins.

Still away to go, and leads to this point have been shrinking, but is there enough time in the states that matter to make a difference?

There is a little blurb in The Fairhaven Neighborhood News this week (actually two) about the furniture movers at the Academy Building.  I agree with the statements of Selectman Espindola that it is unfortunate, and unnecessary that people have taken it to this level.

What is really unfortunate is that the Selectmen did not lay down the law 5 or 6 months ago.  The time has long past for sitting down and "mediate peace".  Indeed one has to ask just who would have the authority to sign a "truce"?

Now it could be that the items moved out of Tourism's office and then moved back in were done so with the intent of a "house warming" gift.  I doubt it though.  I think the latest childish antics are more of  showing as to just how willing this group is to work things out.

It should be a very short and succinct peace conference.  Here are the terms:  This is your "piece" of the building.  This is the door.  Choose which one you want to use.

The planning board held a workshop meeting for the purpose of a proposed new turbine by law.  You can find an article on that in TFNN. It will be interesting to see what comes down the road on that one.  The Board has its work cut out for it.

  1. Throw the bums out already!!!! I cannot believe this Town has wasted so much time (and money) on the issue of the Historical Society. If they are unincorporated, pay no rent, or otherwise continue to put up roadblocks to an actual Town organization, it's time for them to LEAVE. Willingly if possible, by "force" if necessary. I think this issue is extremely low on people's radar, considering other issues in Town. But it does deserve the attention of us taxpayers.

Regarding the turbine bylaws... I personally favor some attional regulation on turbines - especially "industrial"/commercial scaled ones. The problem is, it sounds like a lot of people want to use exclusionary zoning practices in an effort to exclude them from anywhere in Town. These setbacks of miles - 1.4, 3, 5 - are completely and utterly rediculous. Even a setback of 1.4 miles would mean no turbines could be built in Town.

I don't have a problem with having green energy sited in Town, but I don't want the Town to be the locus of all green energy programs(or at least turbines) in the local area. I'd like to share the love with other communities, and let them also partake in the "Green Communities" program.

If we enact any bylaw that basically exludes turbines from Town land based on a radius/setback that has zero scientific or technical rationale, you can be assured that the Commonwealth will overrule that bylaw. Sadly, this seems to be something a lot of people are pushing, and it's something that will provide absolutely NO benefit to this Town.
