Okay, another Tuesday. Another big day for politics nationally and locally.
Second candidates night is tonight. The Fairhaven Business Association at the skating rink at 6:30.
I have been working on a piece based on last week's "night". It has been one of those read, once, twice, three time writings I have written about numerous times in the past.
I have tried various approaches, from the extremely critical, to the "just the facts" style. And in reviewing but styles, well ....
Truthfully, this local election causes just a big a dilemma as the national one in many ways, at least for me. I just don't understand the whys behind it.
In the end, the outcome, at least based on what I have heard, seen and read to date, is not going to be based on any more compelling reason than pure and simple popularity. Yes, the whole concept of an election is the most "popular" candidate wins.
Usually, however the decision to vote for the most popular candidate is based on something more than simply I know him or her. Well, at least in the rational world.
Throw in all the variables, and adding up the pluses and minuses for everyone involved, I personally am not seeing anything here to get real excited about relative to a need for change. But that's why we have elections folks, because you out there may see something or things differently.
I know for some, the goals for this election were established the day after the election three years ago. There was a certain amount of disbelief out there. There was a bit of a movement at one point to find our local version of the anointed one. But that movement seemed to disintegrate right after last May's TM. that camp seems to have split in two based on the line up of supporters for two of the challengers.
But create any line up you want, with the pluses and minuses. Then tell me what proposal is being made that is going to result in more pluses than minuses.
Oh, I can guess a few suggestions out there. So let's have at them and begin the discussion.
Who knows, tonight's candidate's night might be revealing and may reshape the whole race.
Personally, I can the potential for something, given the dynamics involved, although I am unlikely to actually see it since I am unlikely to be able to attend this one.
Who knows, as schedules do change. Anyway, I am at this point underwhelmed.
There are no real concrete signs out there that indicate any real improvement or need. But if I am missing something, let me know.
That's all there is for today. A bit underwhelming I known, as its much of what is going on.
Until next time.
Here we go again! the infamous bell committee is trying to save the bell on Rogers school now..Does anyone know if we have any more historic buildings in Fairhaven with bells in them.I see a pattern here, next step would be to abscond funds from the CPA to fund a bell park.Maybe at the fort and we could have bell ringing in conjunction with the cannon firings on special occasions or as early warning devices for hurricanes. On a second note of insanity, lets fix up the ole school Rogers as a town hall annex..Lets just use the underutilized space in the auditorium for town expansion..This space was perfect when the town was a small entity. The first floor meeting room could be used for expanded office space and the auditorium for all the town board meetings,etc..or i could be just barking up a wrong tree...Well the candidates seem like any other one, same problems, same promises an no real insight..Just a side note: whatever happened to no contract no money at the annual town meeting..The new TA has already funded an if case scenario for the latter.Me seems to think the outgoing town secretary might have encouraged him in order to keep the peace.Am I going crazy or is the town business theory,as usual ,still relevant. You might be right the + an - need to be adjusted to -/+ an +/+ to make an sense at all..
