I apologize for the very late posting this morning. Based on the page views so far, I am guessing a whole bunch of you have been waiting with bated breath for the wit and witticisms from this political blogger (sorry, after the little bit in the S-T today I couldn't resist).
Between the page views and the fact I have received several e-mails and phone calls wanting to know what's up with no post, I am left to draw but one conclusion. Actually there is no conclusion to draw, I wrote the post and put the computer down to go do something else, and forgot to actually hit the publish button.
So here it is ....
If you were wondering about the title, it is from an old friend who a long time ago told me no mater what happens election night in town, always remember the next day will still be Tuesday.
The world is still spinning folks, the alignment of the stars and planets has not been altered. Despite your personal philosophy on global warming and why it might be so chilly out there this morning, the fact remains it is nonetheless chilly; and, today is still in fact Tuesday.
To say the results from last night weren't interesting would of course be to tell a lie. The fact we have unofficial votes in one race with a 1 vote margin is a totally new experience for Fairhaven, at least in my memory. To have two races within a handful of votes is pretty wild.
To be able to say to you that your votes do count, and point out multiple examples of the fact from the same election day, is really great. Maybe not so great for the losing candidates, but it is/are examples of what the saying means.
I saw last night some things that make even this still heart pump a beat or two. I saw and heard some things that make even this stone face crack a smile.
Hand in hand with that also comes the inevitable sound or sight that makes the smile fade from one's face and stills the beating heart.
The details for the same won't be told. The same are not worthy of discussion, and neither are those who somehow seem to take everything over the edge for no apparent reason. These aren't just one sided events either.
The simple fact is that the voters have made their choice. It may take a few weeks to figure out exactly what that choice is in one or two races, but they have chosen.
There is no mistaking the still strong current of the desire for change. It is still running strong, and there is no mistaking the feeling that is out there at this point.
Do not write this election off on the anti-turbine movement, just as it was a mistake by some to write off last year's results for simply that reason, the failure to realize that one's opposition was not solely based on being against the turbines was a big mistake.
The turbines have of course come into play both years. To say otherwise would be foolish, but again just as it would be foolish for anyone to assume that last night's election results are based solely on that one issue.
Quiet frankly, if the turbines were the dominating issue in the big races, one would expect to see margins of similar results in both contests.
The turbines are the match that lit the fire, but the fuel that is burning has been stockpiled over a number of years.
Everyone, and I do mean everyone, needs to realize just what has transpired over the past two years in this town is a combination of many things. They need to understand that one issue may seem to dominate, but many issues have led to the results.
The differences in the vote totals in the two big races should highlight that fact pretty clearly. If it doesn't well I doubt I am going to make it any clearer for you by putting words down here for you to read.
People have been crying for change and they have it, if not all what they sought, a large part. The real challenge now is what to do with it.
The view from the outside looking in is entirely different from that of what you see once you are inside looking out. Here is hoping that that everyone, inside or out, keeps that in mind.
I am going to end it here by leaving you with the following:
I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong. - Abraham Lincoln
mmmmmmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteRight on the heels of the above enlightening comment, I received another that was in my opinion completely off topic.
ReplyDeleteEveryone should feel free to comment about anything written on the blog, but make the comment on topic to the specific blog piece.
Some things are better left unsaid, and some things should be said..
ReplyDeleteBefore any candidate is allowed the opportunity to hold office... they should have to submit to a background check that is fully disclosed at the outset of their campaign.
ReplyDeleteI hope people who have a gripe don't ruin the integrity of this blog by contributing nonsense. If you've got something to say, then say it.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the results of the election would have been different if someone had shared something significant beforehand. But again, maybe not.
Your average citizen cannot request that kind of information from the criminal history system. It must come from an employer, of which the Town of Fairhaven is. Here-say is just that, and anything presented without those kind of documents to back it up is here-say and unfair to raise in any form be it written or verbal. By doing so, we are no better than some of the other special interest groups in town. Has the town of Fairhaven hired people afflicted with addiction before? do these people now hold office? Should we openly allow a person to hold higher office who could be a child molester or a registered sex offender? I am not SAYING there are or aren't... but in order to get hired by a town department or an outside agency with the responsibilites that the office holds, does it not make sense to ensure that the candidate is of good moral character and has not broken laws in their past ???? I'm talking about anyone here, not just the NEW candidates.
