Go Lions!

Apparently The Standard Times doesn't follow Facebook or the other news outlets in town. The online site announces the candidacy of one of the known five, but the article concludes with this particular candidate being the third to announce.  See Friday's edition to the local daily.

Small point I know, but it does highlight the attention our fair haven gets.  But hey, at least we discover in the editorial piece that Acushnet supports GNBVTHS and not Fairhaven. As far as the piece itself, an irrelevant error.  Inexcusable, but irrelevant.

Anyway ... what is that old adage, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Speaking of facts, or the fact that you should never let them get in the way of a good story...

Betting line is out on how many of the five actually end up turning in papers.  Even money for three. It is 10 to 1 on four, and 25 to 1 on five.  Remember, it is based on turning in papers.  Truthfully, I doubt you will even see five take out papers.

Quite frankly, betting on five is a sucker bet folks.  If you are any one of the five, and you actually feel the race is wide open for anyone, well that in and of itself should sound warning bells.  Can anyone win? Absolutely. Heck the 0 - 4 Lions are still in the running for the Superbowl. The likelihood of that however is less than slim and just a hair over none.

Everyone comes into the race with pluses and minuses. Good and bad baggage.  You best be able to weigh those bags before trying to check them in for the flight you are going to be taking.

Who you are, what you have done, or not done, all take up room in one of those bags, or leaves them pretty empty.  While you may consider what you have packed in those bags as appropriate for your journey and all you need, like many trips we take we often discover we have forgotten something or have way over packed.

What your are going to do, or be able to do might be an intangible right now, but what's that line from the movie, a man ought to know his limitations. I suppose in the PC world we live in, man should be person and the pronoun gender neutral.

Least you think I am discussing ability, experience and/or other qualifications here, I am not even getting to that point yet. but will be relevant things to be noted down the road.

But I digress a bit ... or just as true, I was jumping ahead to future discussions.

Point here is honest assessment. Not mine, not the choir that sings your praises.  Your own personal assessment.

Bottom line, odds are at this point are some one of the five will drop.  The chirping is all ready going around.  At this point, the street mummers are more about who they won't vote for rather than who they will.

In many ways officially announcing this early, be it in the papers or on social media, is risky business.  Assume you drop. What does that do for you in the future, if your aspiration is to be Selectman? It is a tell for the future game if you enter.

If you have made the decision for the S &G thrill, you aren't thinking about the town.

Yes the ability to win should factor into any decision to run.  Most people factor that in before they officially announce though.

Being one of the early birds doesn't guaranty you are going to catch that worm.

The days of getting elected based on nothing more than how many people you know getting you elected have not completely disappeared.  That simple method of winning an election on the local level however is not the easy route it use to be.

Anyway ... the path will straighten out a bit as the journey progresses.  I just don't see all five being able to carry their bags through the journey ending with papers being turned in.  Then again human beings do tend to have a stubborn streak.

If it does happen, more the better as far as a heated race.  Might need the BTUs this election season.

Another "if", coupled with a "when" ... if and when we collectively or individually (and there will be a when, at least for this writer) start assessing the announced candidates, let us keep the rhetoric relevant, and please try to be persuasive using some semblance of fact.

Okay, enough for now. As nice a fall day as it is suppose to be, it has started out with a bit of a chill, and it is time to head inside and warm up. Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Until next time.
