Breaking fast with our next Selectman (and other food for thought)

Well I broke down yesterday morning and let the moths out of my wallet.  I managed to make it to the candidates' breakfast program sponsored by the Fairhaven Business Association.

It was an interesting event.  If you are looking for a play by play recap, sorry I don't do shorthand.    All four selectman candidates gave opening statements.  No one shot themselves in the foot and no one hit a home run.

Truth be told they all did a solid job for the first event.

Whether you will agree with everything they all had to say is another mater, but at least none of them appeared to try and take an easy out.  There were strengths and weaknesses by all four, but from a purely political junkie perspective each presented themselves well.

Was it worth sacrificing all those flying caterpillars?

Not 100% sure, maybe if I had actually eaten the breakfast, but I am definitely not sorry for having gone.

It is always interesting to see how people handle themselves on such a stage.  Granted it was a very small crowd, and the questioning was limited to economic topics (not that it was required to be, just seemed to be the questions that were submitted.  Questions had to be in writing and were read to the candidates by one of the association reps.  Nothing wrong with that for the type of event).  It was a "soft" opening for the candidates in many ways.

Still until you have had to do it, never underestimate the difficulty.

If you haven't all ready made up your mind, you really should catch one of the upcoming candidates' forums/debates/whatever they are calling them.  I intend too.

A congratulations and hats off to the Fairhaven Business Association for taking the time and making the effort to do the event.  It is a fairly new group (certainly compared to most in town).  The type of group that has a great deal of potential for the economic health in Fairhaven.

Only the selectman candidates were presented.  Next event up on the election circuit I do believe we will be hearing from the people involved in all the races.

It will be interesting hearing from everyone.  I am assuming the questions for the selectman candidates and other races will be a bit more diverse at other forums.

School Committee candidates are going to have some interesting issues, or should.  In addition to the budget, I am hearing the new school matter is still in play by some.  I am not making this up.  It seems this topic is destined to last until the doors open on the new school.

Board of Health race has some potential for interesting debate also.

Speaking of interesting, I have been seeing some stuff being posted online again.  I am really going to have to get back to addressing some things.  As always, it will be a from a personal perspective, but things haven't quite reached the point where any serious effort is warranted yet.

I missed the recent Board of Appeals meeting.  Quite honestly, I feel asleep before it started.  I have seen some of the personal reports.  In case you don't know the meeting dealt in part with the turbines.  I am reserving judgment anything until I see the tape air on channel 18.

Speaking of judgment, if you read today's S-T, seems we will be getting a further decision from the actual, and from all the arguments to the contrary from what I can determine the only person with the authority to determine the validity of the contract, being the Judge in the Superior Court where the case  is pending.

As I said before, it will be in the courts where the legality of the issue ends up being decided.

Okay, I have been pretty quiet on the charter commission proposal the last few days.  Just a note that most people I speak with seem positive about the idea.  There will definitely need to be more information given so everyone can get a grasp on the concept.  As stated in the past this time of year is bad for a lot of people for a lot of reasons.   The idea isn't dead, it is just in first gear at the moment.

Not sure whether I will be posting this weekend.  If I do it most likely will not be both days.  So for whichever day I miss, have a good one, and have a great and safe weekend.
