Enough already or is it never enough?

Had enough of the summer heat yet?  Not to worry, in typical New England fashion, in six months we will all be wishing for summer time again.

The Fairhaven Neighborhood News is back.  Not that it went anywhere but on a two week hiatus. Interesting reporting on the Selectmen's meeting and the issue involving moorings and "public" dock. The dock issue is to be continued, as with most things.  I suggest you read up on the matter, and try and catch the meeting on government access.

Speaking of government access.  Just a point.  There is no reason why any public meeting in this town should not be covered.  Sure you have the details to work out.  Getting camera operators and "air" time, equipment, etc.  If I understand the current contract correctly though, the "air" time shouldn't be a huge hurdle.  As far as equipment and paying operators, well the money for that isn't an issue.  Just a point.

In today's Standard-Times there is an article where for the first time there is some public indication of what apparently is one of the many options there are still on the table in the turbine negotiations.  The TTD rate.  In simple terms, this is the town's share of the money NSTAR has to pay for the electricity generated by the turbines.  Not sure the percentage in the article is accurate although the dollar amount seems to be.

Anyway, we have an indication of what one of the options is.  Did anyone really need a leak to figure out that was what one of the options would be?

I am sure the article its going to stimulate the debate a bit.

Today's the deadline to pull papers for the Board of Health race.  One milestone to the finish of that election reached.  This one will certainly be interesting.

Turnout.  Two weeks ago I would have been pretty confident predicting this one.  Today, who the heck knows.  I know it is like beating a dead horse with a stick, but turnout is so key in this election.  Potential decisions to be made between now and September 9th could provide significant motivation for people in one camp or the other to react at the polls, or even stay away from the polls.

Enough on that.  The election, the turbines both significant.  Yet they have become all encompassing.  As significant as those matters are, they are not the only significant things going on.

At least we know definitively when one issue will be resolved.  Truth be told, I am literally hoping that one, the September 9th election, isn't even close, no matter who wins, no matter what the turnout.

The other one needs to be resolved sooner than that.  At least the selectmen's decision.  It does.  It has to be.

I think that is just about it for today.  It is pretty much getting close to being it for both of the "prime" issues in here today.Time for some serious refocusing on everyone's part I think.

Anyway, be safe.

  1. In the blog today about the Standard Times news : "Not sure the percentage in the article is accurate although the dollar amount seems to be."

The information supplied to the public through the news media gets twisted between dollars and percentages.

If you know the dollar amount is correct for the town at around $50,000.00 then the percentages in the news today are way out of line.

The way I do the math is the town gets around 10% of the total profit and that includes the lease payment.

This ongoing percentage story is one item that needs attention in the negotiations where the parties have been "sworn to be secret"

Pay attention when "minimizing (not to mention 'eliminating') public access to waterways" starts being talked about like it's no big deal. It is a big deal.
In this case, it may have been an innocent oversight, but in other cases it might be a part of something bigger.
There is an informative letter in the FNN from the Chair of the govt. study committee. It's worth noting, if you plan on following the group's discussions.
