Just 5 positive things, that’s easy enough in no particular order:- Beautiful, accessible coastline.- The right mix of small town New England charm plus business and industry.- Comparatively Low taxes. That’s right, LOW taxes. We were looking at Mattapoisett and Rochester, for example, and for a house with the same appraised cost the taxes are nearly double. And we’re not using the schools in either town so there’s no advantage there for us. - Easy access to Boston, Providence, Cape, Newport- Full suite of town services
Some could, would if given the opportunity and may very well be presently disputing the items on the list. Knock your socks off on that if you want. No such list is without dispute. Everyone has preferences. In my bizarro universe however the list is rock solid.
Sure you can say the suite of town services is in fact to full, with people trying to cram more things into all the time. Might even end up with even lower taxes if we settled on being the "Embassy" type concept instead of the "Plaza".
But right now, at this magic moment, so long as there is not not too much different and new, so long as nothing comes along to take us by surprise, most in this town sip from a pretty sweet cup of wine, having just about everything they want. It may not last forever. Certainly not til the end of time, but in the scheme of life, in the comparative world that surrounds us, at this particular magic moment ...
And after that I believe it appropriate to offer my most sincere apologies to Mr. Pomus and Mr. Shuman, a guy named Jay and some other Americans, and a few Drifters here and there.
All kidding aside, those are just 5 very positive things about town. Sure not everyone is happy with the level of business/industry in town. Some want more some want less. One good fact, one positive. The same has for the most part, a very large part been "contained" along historical pathways. Has it been perfect? No? but show me anywhere that it has.
The other simple fact about it is but for the business, we wouldn't have the suite of services.Development is always a doubled edged sword. Depending on which side of the blade you strike with or are cut by I suppose tends to color your view.
As far as taxes, if you compare apples to apples, the commentator is correct. Many people get hung up on the tax rate, not realizing just what that number is and what it means. House prices average less, you get more bang for you buck here. Let's face it, we are considered "blue collar" suburbia (and as far as I am concerned I am darned proud of that fact).
It is always what it is folks. Despite the perception that the glass is half empty, in reality it is at many times, for many things, more than half full.
That's all there is today. No need to say more and spoil the moment.
Be safe.
