No SouthCoast rail. Not likely this year. Not likely next year. Not passed on the House vote taken last night. Is it still a possibility? Sure it is. Is anyone going to bet on it at this point though?
We have been totally wrapped up in our local election, while this also important tidbit has been in the limelight elsewhere. Who to blame on this one?
Take your pick and you would probably be right.
I could go on a rant about how this area doesn't get its fair share. I could delve into why this area doesn't get its fair share. I could tell you all of that, but most of you know the reasons.
Absent some behind the scene deal which I don't envision, the betting line on this issue for this year is again the "over".
The Standard Times has yet another piece on the B of H election. Come Friday, the day after the deadline for requesting a recount, I imagine we will see or hear of the next stage in this saga.
On another matter, the precinct meetings this year are scheduled for May 2, 2013. This is a Thursday. The individual precinct meetings commence at 6:30 P.M. All precincts will be meeting at the Middle School.
Why should you attend? First you elect your precinct chairs and secretary/clerk. Secondly, depending on how your chairs wish to proceed, Fin Com members are appointed/re-appointed. Third, ties in the election for Town Meeting members are dealt with. Also, vacancies in Town Meeting positions are filled when people seek a vacant seat.
After the precinct meetings, there is a unified informal session held in the cafeteria to address questions regarding the warrants for the Annual and Special Town Meetings. The past few years have seen this session become a bit more stream lined and beneficial. It is a chance to ask questions and get information on the articles in advance of the day of Town Meeting.
If you can attend, you should. Quite frankly, at least attendance the actual precinct meetings, should be considered one of your elected duties.
I think some people tend to lose sight of the fact that as an elected Town Meeting member you are a representative of the people in your precinct.
Enough said on that.
April 10th (tomorrow) at 6:00 P.M. is the first of two scheduled public hearings on the DOR report on the Town. What's it all about? Well I am not exactly sure. I assume it will be to discuss the proposed articles for the STM. I am hoping it will be more than a run down of the recommendations. I am also hoping something concrete comes of it. I suppose time will tell.
That's all I have time for today. Tough week ahead schedule wise, even for an early riser, so to the joy of some, I may be skipping some days this week.
Anyway, be safe.

Whatever anyone thinks of the rail, and other big 'investments,' in the end it all comes down to MONEY. Projects of this magnitude shouldn't be implemented based solely on the number of convincing arguments for it, but in addition there must be a concrete plan to pay for it.
ReplyDeleteWe can't keep having more, and building more based on 'projected' revenues from any source. Are we ever willing to give something up, in exchange for something else? I'm sure that would vary on an individual's thinking.
As convincing and beneficial rail service might be, I don't yet see a convincing plan to pay for it.
