All right, its Friday. Whatever else that entails, it means for most it it the end of the official workweek which more frequently seems to never officially end. Life. Isn't it grand.
I suppose it being the NFL championship this weekend (the "S" word is copyrighted you know) all the trash talk this week was appropriate. Hey, if you can't talk trash before the big game, you miss out on half the fun right?
If you want an advance look at the Warrant for the Special Town Meeting, it is posted on the Town website. This one hasn't even been held and there are a few jockeying for position in the queue for the STM in May.
Seems the town employees are going to be getting a survey from the Town Government Study Committee.
Interesting "editorial" piece in yesterday's Advocate about minutes, agendas, postings. Take from it what you will. Some valid stuff, some stuff not so valid.
Monday night the selectmen perform the annual pull the articles from a paper bag routine for the annual Town Meeting.
The former Rogers/Oxford school sites are on the boards agenda. An 8:00 P.M. appointment with Town Counsel to discuss the article on the STM. Most colossal mistake made for both those buildings was essentially no action occurring to deal with those buildings once the decision was approved by the town vote to build a new school.
Point blank, from that moment on it was a foregone conclusion that the town was going to have two buildings on its hands once the doors opened for the new school (okay, two months after the doors opened). All the talk about we couldn't deal with it early because the schools still had possession, were still using them, hadn't declared them surplus do not fly. Neither does the "surprise" factor. If I ever get around to writing that book, the whole committee thing would make a great chapter.
There are multiple layers of reality checks that have to be taken on these buildings, not the least of which both sites have significant issues and I am not just talking about the condition of the buildings. Sewer lines, boundary lines, easements, park grounds, other occupants, zoning, neighborhood concerns.
Both buildings have limited resale value. Memories may be priceless, real estate always has a value. See some of the issues above for the limited value, and include the condition of the buildings too.
I could go on and on, and we have gone on and on in the past. We will again, collectively as a town, for some time I think, unfortunately.
And time is always a premium, so I have to run.
Be safe.
Smoke an mirrors an pull the wool over there eyes seems to be a common way to do business in town. Lets hope we have learned our lesson an become more aware when new buildings an equipment are being requested. Many times less is needed when requested
