Okay, you want some interesting reading, see the selectmen's meeting article in this weeks Fairhaven Neighborhood News. It starts on page 4.
It seems that what is shaping up, and I am again treading in the dangerous waters of assumption, is we will see an article to authorize the selectmen to sell the buildings based on the RFP the board is still drawing up.
Trust me when I tell you that from a strictly individual point of view, I have ceased to give two cents about these buildings. From that individual point of view, the sooner we can unload both of them, the better the town will be.
The bigger picture however always involves more than an individual point of view. First and foremost, the most important detail not specifically mentioned in the article was the exact amount of any bond.
Keep in mind, reading the consultant report which we were told we have to have, this was a primary recommendation, i.e. a sufficient bond to insure performance. Grapevine reports from some who watched the meeting indicate the bond is essentially going to be a paper lion at best.
You know what? I truly don't give a hoot anymore either.
We are going to end up giving away the Rogers and Oxford schools. We are going to either see them restored to their former grandeur or not. We are going to see complaints for years about the new uses, or not. And again, I don't care at this point.
From what I have also heard, I just wonder how the financial ability to do a proposal cannot be the most important criteria.
This is now one of those "whatever" moments in life. whatever you do, just get title out of the Town's hands.
I can tell you one thing for certain though. I am glad I am not the town's official who has to sign off on this one.
The very sad part of this whole scenario is we are going to spend thousands of dollars more, and at least 5 figures left of the decimal point, in direct appropriations or funneled from existing accounts, not to mention "time" costs to get what? To chase about four different pipe dreams.
I have one dream in all this. Get the properties out of the town's ownership. We will have the added benefit of new history in a few years to either eat crow about being or eat turkey. Just set the table for the meal.
Be safe.
Before these schools are sold the cost will still accumulate ,and lets not forget the PR bell that some people will want saved and put in another space. The original plan was to incorporate it into the new school, whatever happened to that idea..Kerchunk,there goes another chunk of cash.......
