It is official. We five people publicly announcing for the high office of Selectmen. The latest announcement appearing on a Facebook post Friday afternoon.
Now I don't know what may make you get excited, but I can tell you that if it does stay at five, I will be thrilled to no end.
Some of you may have better way back machines then I do, but I cannot remember this ever happening. The most crowded race for Selectman I can remember is four, and that was what, in 2012? What makes this year's election (really next year's) unique, is the fact so many have decided to announce so soon.
Hey, what the heck, the more the merrier, right? Well yes and no. More on the more and merry concept some other time.
If nothing else, a crowded filed should provide a bit of a financial boon for the local newspapers. It should also help fill space too. I know it will fill a lot of space here.
Now going forward, if you would like to let me know where you think the discussion should be heading, well by all means, let me here from you. Truthfully though, I did not once again get into this fray without some idea where I want to go. Would seem a bit pointless to try again without some game plan, right? Your ideas will be appreciated though. If they jive with mine, well all is good.
The five in the mix right now will provide some twist and turns as time goes on where that game plan may have to be adjusted.
Plenty to discuss. Just the dynamics of some of the current players. Seriously, think about it.

The fact that three members from one committee, well former committee, have decided to run for Selectman in the same election is a bit mind boggling. How do they distinguish themselves and their performances from what was touted as a collaborative effort?
More on that later. You will probably read that phrase many times. Why? As I have noted several times, despite the announcements, it is early. Intentions change. No point in doing detailed pieces about any individual or all individuals until there is a bit more certainty as to the make up.
Plenty of other stuff to address in the interim.
Lots of stuff on the national level, although you readers seem to not enjoy that wide a scope. Same for the more limited state and regional levels. Locally, there seems to be great interest in the brick and mortar issues. Plenty of those going on right now. Heck, all we need is to throw in a whistle and we would have a bunch of pieces that could be done around some other old cliches.
One thing I can't get too worked up over is one of the brick issues. Simply mind boggling. Especially the arguments from some saying they didn't know. Living in a vacuum isn't an excuse. Neither is rejecting the rejecting the votes of town meeting. But hey, they do say persistence pays off, don't they?
Persistence is something to keep in mind.
Experience, common sense, knowledge, and leadership are also things to keep in mind going forward. When you make those four attributes, or any combination of the same, your claim to fame so to speak, well you best be able to establish your claim, and for some defend it.
Enough for an early Monday morning.
I can't comment as to why there are so many running for the position of Selectman, but to be honest, I'm happy to see it. None of them are particularly favorable in my mind, but if any one provides credible evidence to prove himself worthy, I will give him my vote. One candidate is completely off my radar due to his support of Common Core and PARCC. (It's an untested, unproven education 'experiment' that Bill Gates claims we won't know the consequences of for "six to ten years.")
ReplyDeleteJust an FYI as to the Common Core PARCC. Fine as to explaining the reasons why someone is off your radar. Will not be having a debate on the matter as part of this piece however.
DeleteArrogance has no place in the Select Board , just an observation
